LAX is Lax on Cannabis Enforcement

Earlier this year, Los Angeles International Airport posted an official statement on its site, noting that "California’s passage of proposition 64, effective January 1, 2018, allows for individuals 21 years of age or older to possess up to 28.5 grams of marijuana and 8 grams of concentrated marijuana for personal consumption."

But according to the Los Angeles Times, people have only just realized this means you can bring weed through the airport.

Specifically, the policy means that anyone over 21 can have that specific amount of marijuana—roughly a full sandwich-sized bag—in their carry-on bag within the airport without worrying about getting it confiscated or getting arrested by the LAPD.

That makes LAX the first major domestic airport to take a stance on weed.

There's a ban at Denver International Airport, even though marijuana is legal in Colorado, and most other airports in states where weed is legal—like Boston's Logan International Airport—don't have specific policies for or against marijuana possession.

There's some fine print, though. One, you'll need to get through the TSA's security checkpoint, where officers have to abide by federal laws (and federally, weed is illegal).

That said, it doesn't mean your weed will get taken at security, since the TSA's primary focus is terrorism and public safety threats. If you do get pulled aside, and the officers find weed in your carry-on, their next step is to tell local police.

And, well, the LAPD has already made their stance pretty clear.

Our advice? Don't go over the allowed amount, full stop, and give yourself some extra time through security, in case you have to spend time heading over to the airport police office to get your weed checked and approved.
