How Many People Actually Use Marijuana?
First of all, it's hard to know exactly how many people use cannabis because people tend to under-report their drug use. Accordingly, these numbers are probably smaller than the actual amount of people that use marijuana.
That being said, according to the 2021 Gallup Poll, 49% of American adults say they have used marijuana. That equals about 127 million people in the U.S.
And 12% say they are regular users. That's about 31 million people in the United States.
Of that, about 20 million are men, and roughly 11 million are women.
Again, most experts would agree that these numbers are somewhat lower that the actual figures due to under-reporting. For some additional perspective, the amount of people that regularly smoke marijuana is about the same that smoke cigarettes. However, 72% percent of tobacco users say they are trying to quit, so it's likely that marijuana use with outpace cigarette use in the very near future.
